Promoting biodiversity – Taking responsibility: ENNEATECH in action for SDG 15

Protecting biodiversity is one of the key challenges of our time — and an issue that is firmly anchored in Enneatech’s corporate strategy. As an active member of the UN Global Compact, we are specifically committed to the sustainability goal SDG 15 “Life on Land”. After all, biodiversity is not a minor matter — it is essential for the survival of our planet and our society. It ensures fertile soils, clean water, stable climate conditions and healthy nutrition. Conversely, the loss of biodiversity always means the loss of livelihoods — both globally and locally. Climate change is further exacerbating the effects of biodiversity loss — especially in cities. Heatwaves, poor air quality and a lack of green spaces lead to health problems such as heat stress, respiratory diseases and mental health crises. Our latest activities show how diverse and practical companies can get involved in protecting biodiversity:

Alliance for Biodiversity: Achieving more together

Our membership of the “Alliance for Biodiversity” underlines our efforts to develop and implement sustainable solutions for the conservation of biodiversity together with other companies. At the founding event in August 2024, we committed to implementing at least one operational measure to protect biodiversity as a first step

Creating habitats: Biodiversity on our company premises …

The decline in insect populations in Germany and Europe is alarming. Studies show that around 32% of grassland butterflies have disappeared in Germany since 1990, and up to 50% across the EU. Prof. Dr. Josef Settele from the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research in Halle cites changes in land use, pesticides, intensive agriculture and the loss of near-natural habitats as the main causes. Around 40% of insect species are already endangered and around 5% are considered extinct — with far-reaching consequences for our ecosystems and food security.

As part of the biodiversity project on the company premises, we have therefore created insect-friendly flowering areas and new retreats for small animals. Plants such as geranium, rudbeckia, agastache and asters provide nectar for pollinators all year round. Evergreen shrubs provide shelter for birds and insects. We also deliberately avoid the use of pesticides in order to preserve the natural balance. In addition to the benefits for biodiversity, our greening also helps to improve the microclimate. Plants help to filter pollutants and particulate matter from the air and ensure a pleasant cooling of the environment through evaporation. Especially in the summer months, green spaces prevent overheating and at the same time store water, which has a positive long-term effect on the local climate. These interactions show: Measures to promote biodiversity have an impact far beyond species protection. They improve the quality of life, increase resilience to climate impacts and make our locations more sustainable — both ecologically and economically.

Insect Day 2025: Together for more diversity

On April 3, 2025, we attended the “Day of Insects” in Berlin — an event that impressively highlighted the importance of insects for our ecosystems under the motto “From Asphalt to Life”. Organized by Insect Respect, the event offered a platform for interdisciplinary exchange between science, business, politics and society. In addition to exciting presentations and discussions, there were a variety of ideas and concrete solutions on how to preserve and create new habitats for insects — from urban spaces to company premises. The event made it clear that the protection of biodiversity is a joint task in which every contribution counts — whether on a large or small scale.
Biodiversity is more than just an ecological goal — it also protects our health and food security. For example, species-rich soils ensure higher yields and better water uptake, while pollinators such as wild bees and butterflies are necessary for the preservation of around 90% of all wild plants and over 75% of our crops. Biodiversity is also crucial in medical terms: over half of all modern medicines originally come from natural sources. And the protection of biodiversity is also psychologically important: studies — for example by the University of Kiel — show that a high diversity of bird species increases life satisfaction. Regular contact with intact nature reduces stress and strengthens mental health. Conversely, a loss of biodiversity can lead to alienation from nature, which promotes psychological stress and illness.

Regional responsibility: Blühende Landschaft Großefehn

As part of the “Blühende Landschaft Großefehn” network, we are also actively involved in promoting biodiversity in our region beyond our company premises. In Großefehn, we specifically support projects that create species-rich habitats, provide food and shelter for wild bees, butterflies and other pollinators and thus strengthen the ecological balance.

With these initiatives, we are making an active contribution to protecting biodiversity and achieving the global sustainability goals.
